The European Squash Federation (ESF) is making significant strides in enhancing the visibility of squash across Europe with the imminent launch of European Squash TV. In an interview with the Squash Facilities Network (SFN), ESF Vice-President Otto Kalvo shared insights into this groundbreaking initiative and what it means for the future of squash broadcasting.
A Dedicated Platform for European Squash
"At this stage, this is purely for European squash content," Kalvo explained. "As soon as we can get every Member Nation in Europe on this platform, it will become their media platform." The ESF aims to unite all 46 Member Nations under one digital umbrella, providing a centralized hub for live and on-demand squash content.
Independence and Control Over Content
Addressing questions about the platform's relationship with other squash streaming services, Kalvo clarified, "We have a totally independent agreement with Sportall." This independence allows the ESF full control over its content, enabling them to tailor the platform to the specific needs of European squash.
Subscription Model Under Consideration
While Sportall typically operates on a yearly subscription basis, the ESF is evaluating different models for European Squash TV. "We will discuss and decide this within the coming month," Kalvo stated. "I think we're going to end up with a free subscription and some kind of premium model." This approach aims to balance accessibility with the need to fund high-quality content production.
Launch Timeline and First Events
Eager to begin broadcasting, Kalvo expressed optimism about the platform's rollout. "We hope to cover the first event as fast as possible," he said. The ESF is currently in the process of organizing the necessary infrastructure, including courts, cameras, and commentators, to ensure a high-quality viewing experience.
Opportunities for National Championships and Clubs
Facility managers and organizers of significant events, such as national championships, may have the opportunity to feature their events on European Squash TV. "We are very open to that," Kalvo affirmed. "I would be happy to speak with them. We have to learn how it works, and of course, there has to be some kind of quality control."
Embracing a Learning Curve
Kalvo acknowledged that the ESF is navigating new territory with this venture. "We are learning here while we are walking," he admitted. "We will be up and running within one month. Now we are transferring all the content that we own for on-demand views, and hopefully, live events will start as soon as possible."
Harnessing Technology and AI
The ESF plans to leverage advanced technologies to enhance their content. "We are now signed up to a media platform, and the content can be what we call 'value-added,' meaning that we can do all kinds of clips or reels or whatever," Kalvo explained. "AI is going to help us a lot at this stage, but we need to work closely with skilled people who can help us move into social media platforms with our content."
Call for Volunteers and Experts
To support this ambitious project, the ESF is seeking to establish a new Digital Streaming Committee. "We don't have the team on our board now," Kalvo said. "Our idea is to create a committee that has knowledge about different things regarding media and distribution. They can be either volunteers or employees. Alternatively, we have to buy that service from Sportall."
He emphasized the importance of building internal expertise: "We are trying to secure as much knowledge for the ESF as possible. So the plan is to attract some good people to be part of a committee responsible for European Squash TV."
Looking Ahead
The launch of European Squash TV represents a significant step forward in promoting squash across Europe. By creating a dedicated platform, the ESF aims to increase the sport's visibility, support its elite athletes, and engage a broader audience as squash moves closer to its anticipated Olympic debut at the Los Angeles 2028 Games.
Get Involved
For facility managers, event organizers, and media professionals interested in contributing to European Squash TV, Otto Kalvo extends an open invitation: "We are very open to collaborating. Please reach out—we're eager to explore possibilities together."
