Established in 1927, the United States Professional Tennis Association (USPTA) has long been a trade association dedicated to supporting teaching professionals. With a membership of approximately 15,000 to 16,000, the organization has focused on providing education, certification, continuing education, and professional development for tennis professionals. Reflecting the evolving landscape of racket sports, the USPTA has now changed its name to the Racket Sports Professionals Association (RSPA).
The association is intentionally positioning itself as a global organization, having already established partnerships in China, Japan, Australia, South America, and parts of Europe. This global outreach allows them to serve a broader international membership and collaborate with racket sports federations and organizations worldwide.
Expanded Focus Beyond Tennis
"We recognized that the world of racket sports is growing and evolving beyond traditional tennis," said Brian Dillman, CEO of the Racket Sports Professionals Association. "By expanding our focus to include sports like platform tennis, padel, and squash, we aim to better serve the needs of sports facilities and their customers."
As part of this expansion, the association has launched its first Squash Certification program. Developed in collaboration with experts like Rich Wade and Graeme Williams. The program offers professionals an opportunity to gain official recognition in squash. This initiative reflects the association's commitment to providing a wider range of skills and certifications to its members.
Developing Off-Court Professional Skills
"While coaching and on-court skills remain at the core of our mission, we are placing new emphasis on developing business, management, and leadership skills," said Brian Dillman. "By introducing training and certification programs in areas such as marketing, finance, human resources, and facility operations, we aim to prepare professionals for roles that extend beyond coaching, enabling them to take on greater responsibilities within sports facilities.
Shared Vision for the Future of Racket Sports Facilities
The Racket Sports Professionals Association shares a vision with organizations like the Squash Facilities Network to create future racket sports facilities that integrate different sports, prioritize the consumer experience, and establish successful business models benefiting all stakeholders. There is a recognition of the potential to learn from the fitness industry and to work collectively to shape the future of racket sports facilities.
