The study "Associations of Specific Types of Sports and Exercise with All-Cause and Cardiovascular Disease Mortality" evaluates the impact of various sports on long-term health outcomes, specifically focusing on mortality. With data from over 80,000 British adults, it highlights racquet sports as among the most beneficial in reducing mortality risks.

Racquet sports, including squash, showed remarkable results:

  • All-Cause Mortality Reduction: Participants engaging in racquet sports had a 47% lower risk of all-cause mortality compared to non-participants.

  • Cardiovascular Mortality Reduction: The risk of death from cardiovascular diseases (CVD) was reduced by 56% for those involved in racquet sports, showing the strongest association among all the sports assessed.


Squash and Other Sports: Comparative Analysis


Squash stands out for its intense, intermittent nature, which can provide cardiovascular and muscular endurance benefits. Compared to other sports:

  • Cycling and Swimming also lowered all-cause mortality risks but had less impact on CVD mortality.

  • Football and Running did not show statistically significant reductions in either all-cause or CVD mortality in this study.


The intermittent bursts in squash may contribute uniquely to cardiovascular health, combining high-intensity aerobic and anaerobic exercise, which may account for its exceptional performance in reducing mortality risks. The sport’s demands on agility, quick reflexes, and endurance foster both heart health and muscular strength, critical factors in longevity.


Dose-Response and Intensity Factors


The study examined if the intensity or duration of participation influenced health outcomes:

  • For racquet sports, a U-shaped relationship was observed, where moderate intensity seemed optimal for mortality reduction. This suggests that regular but not overly strenuous squash sessions might maximize health benefits.

Given these findings, squash could be positioned not only as a competitive sport but also as a preventative health activity. Emphasizing its health benefits, especially for older adults, may help facilities attract a broader audience looking to enhance longevity and heart health.
